100 Things Mets Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die
If you had to come up with a list of the 100 quintessential things about the Mets that you needed to know, what would they be? You could take the best 100 of the 800-plus players in franchise history, and weave in the managers. You could take the 100 most important games the team has played, but you'd be grasping toward the end. You could take 100 experiences from a Mets fan's perspective and arrange them from top to bottom. You could take the top 100 key moments from a historical perspective. Or you could throw them all together and dive right in.Picking these moments takes a thorough knowledge of baseball history, a floor strewn with books and printouts, an electronic spreadsheet that allows for constant resorting, and a pressing deadline. One thing that wasn't agonized over was the understanding that rooting for the Mets is the greatest test of a sports fan's soul in New York. The sweeping highs and lows, the inferiority complex that comes from living in the shadow of Big Brother's Evil Empire, the legacy that not one but two baseball teams had to abandon New York for you to even exist, and the underlying feeling that things can't possibly get any worse. Well, sometimes they do. And sometimes you're on top of the world. From the Inside Flap 100 Things Mets Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die is the ultimate resource guide for true fans of the New York Mets. Whether you're a die-hard booster from the days of Tom Terrific or a recent supporter of Reyes, Wright, and the "New Mets," these are the 100 things every fan needs to know and do in their lifetime. Acclaimed author Matthew Silverman has collected every essential piece of Mets knowledge and trivia, as well as must-do activities, and ranks them all from 1 to 100, providing an entertaining and easy-to-follow checklist as you progress on your way to fan superstardom. As the Mets prepare to leave Shea for their new digs across the street at Citi Field, 100 Things will guide you through all the places to sit and see in the old ballpark before it goes the way of the dinosaur. Never watched a game from the loge or checked out the Diamond Club? 2008 marks your last chance, and 100 Things is your must-have guide to the do's and don'ts. Whether you're a lifelong fan, a youngster following in his or her parents' footsteps, or the significant other of a diehard fan about to be adopted into the Mets family, 100 Things Mets Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die is the perfect how-to guide to being a real fan. Most Mets fans have taken in a game or two at Shea, have seen the highlights of Game 6, and have heard the story of the '69 Miracle Mets. But only real fans realize that a smudge of shoe polish helped the team win their first world championship, know where the best place to sit in Shea's upper deck is, can recite the team's starting lineup in their inaugural season, or have visited the Mets Hall of Fame.
Matthew Silverman has written and edited six books on the Mets. He is the author of Mets Essential and coauthor with Jon Springer of Mets by the Numbers. He coedited Meet the Meets (with Greg Spira) plus two versions of Total Mets. He was associate editor for The 2008 ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia and served as managing editor for The 2007 ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia, Total Football, and two editions of Total Baseball. I am a diehard Mets fan and have been since 1969. I have read LOTS of Mets books over the years and most were good reads. This book , by far is the best. It reviews the top 100 most famous moments as a Met fan. LET'S GO METS!
Very entertaining book! Bought it for my father, a lifelong Mets fan. He enjoyed reading it and reminising about the clubs history.
