But just how they have become the world's greatest running nation is something that has been intriguing fellow athletes and sports fans for just as long.Divided into four parts, "More Fire" is a motivational volume that gets to the root of why and how Kenyan runners are the world's best. It begins with a look at running in Kenya, the landscape, the physical conditions, and the people. The second part surveys the training methods and techniques most commonly used. Great book
As an avid runner with some extra time on his hands, I read this book over the recent holiday season and have to say I really enjoyed it. The author certainly has a passion for both Kenya and running, and that feeling comes through in a very conversational and matter of fact tone. The book introduces us to dozens of interesting and accomplished Kenyan runners and coaches and lets us experience firsthand the training and lifestyle that has carried many of these individuals to the top. Although touching on some of the problems that exist in modern day Kenya (poverty, tribal warring, etc), the author also paints a wonderful and lush image of the Kenyan people and countryside as he takes us along on daily runs in, for example, the high and clear air of the rift valley region. Overall I found the book to be both inspirational and entertaining. My favorite suggestion from the book on how to run the Kenyan way is to "run each race as though you were delivering a message to the Promised Land!" A great piece of advice!
Kenya vs. Ethiopia
This book was a noble effort for an equally great cause. And so much is inspiring and accurate. However, as the author stated there were many other great running nations. It goes in cycles. For example the last New York City marathon did not have one Kenyan, let alone African in the top three for the womens race (2008). But more important when it comes to records, world records, the Ethiopians dominate. The world record for the 5000 meters for women, Ethiopia. 10,000 women - Ethiopia; 5,000 meters for the men - Ethiopia; 10,000 meters for the men - Ethiopia. And let's not forget the marathon for men - Ethiopia. By the way the women marathon world record is from England. Nice book but partial to Kenya and the authors experiences.
Everybody can benefit from a bit More Fire
Having read many books on running over the years on all aspects of running I can sincerely say that "More Fire - How to run the Kenyan Way" is the best book on running I have read.
Already been a fan of the previous edition, this edition is even better and pushes the knowledge and insight about Kenyan running to the next level.
Unlike other books on running, which focus too much on the scientific and technical aspects of running "More Fire" is a result of in-depth analysis and evidence of how the Kenyan elite athletes train, how they live, how they race and their fundamental values, attitudes and behaviours, which drives them to excel and dominate in the world of running.
I strongly recommend the book to all the aspiring runners, athletic coaches or those involved in governing athletics, it is a must read. Many valuable lessons can be learnt from how the Kenyan's do it.
