Another great book by DK
A great book for those interested in a quick, but thorough, look at different sports. Easy to read, lots of figures and full of interesting facts. I would have rated it five stars except I don't like the "astroturf" book cover.
A Bible For The Player, Coach, And Fan
This book is the sports bible, period. This is an excellent reference for the player, coach, and fan alike, a sports encyclopedia like no other. The book begins with a section on the history of the Olympics from its origins in ancient Greece to the modern international summer and winter competitions performed in various cities around the world. The main section titled "The Sports" is divided into twelve chapters. Descriptions of over two hundred sporting disciplines are given with information such as the physical and mental fitness of each player, the dimensions of the playing space, the general rules and strategies, the positions of each player, and the required equipment such as clubs and balls. Each sport described has a "Need2Know" panel giving essential facts about it. "Sidelines" panels give trivial facts such as attendance and scoring records. "Stat Central" gives the numbers in various categories for top performers in the sport. Another thing that is cool about the book is the Astroturf on the front and back covers. Whoever came up with that idea? But this is a fun and informative reference work.
Interesting for an adult, not a 13 year old
Purchased for my 13 year old son, who watches ESPN religiously. He was not thrilled. WAY too technical and boring for him. Just a word to the wise that teenagers probably won't be impressed. I thought the actual turf grass cover was pretty cool. It would make a great coffee table book. Unfortunately, my son doesn't have a coffee table. (I think it's under the bed right now- too bad).
